About
Deb Thornton · Senior Software Engineer
I'm a senior software engineer based in Philadelphia, PA, building full-stack systems: React/TypeScript frontends, Java, Node.js, and PL/SQL backend services, on AWS. My track record spans authentication and identity systems, backend service integration, and modernizing legacy infrastructure, including securing identity management for 200,000+ users.
I use Claude daily as part of my regular workflow: code generation, review, and refactoring inside a large, established codebase. That's a different thing from building or configuring AI systems myself, which is a gap I'm intentionally closing.
Away from the keyboard, I'm usually at the piano, elbow-deep in a 3D printer, doing laps at the pool, or being supervised by my dog.

- •Designed the AWS Lambda backend for a custom multi-factor authentication (MFA/OTP) system and led a phased SSO migration off a legacy login system, securing all 200,000+ users in the process, paired with React frontend flows for device management, session-timeout enforcement, and account recovery.
- •Owned backend services (Java middleware and PL/SQL) powering an embedded business intelligence tool, integrating Google Looker for embedded reporting, and built the React/TypeScript frontend with Pendo instrumentation for in-app product analytics.
- •Diagnosed and fixed reliability problems in a platform-wide search feature, from underlying search-technology limitations to duplicate-result and data-integrity bugs.
- •Delivered feature and reliability work spanning Node.js/AWS Lambda microservices, Oracle/PL/SQL services, and React, with CI/CD and release engineering via GitHub Actions, and drove WCAG 2.1 AA accessibility remediation for enterprise clients including Wells Fargo and Bank of America.
- •Architected a spreadsheet-style editable grid package from scratch in React/TypeScript, spanning prop/API design, a publish pipeline, and CI setup, later integrated into the core platform.
- •Maintained a shared React component library consumed platform-wide, shipping near-monthly dependency upgrades and reusable, Storybook-documented, Jest-tested components.
- •Used Claude daily for AI-assisted coding, code review, and refactoring across a large, established codebase, and helped integrate automated accessibility checks into an AI-powered pull-request review step.

- •Architected the backend for the internal partner operations portal on AWS, using Cognito (via Amplify) for auth, API Gateway-backed REST endpoints, and S3 for file management and install assets, and rebuilt the legacy AngularJS frontend into a scalable React/Redux architecture; added Zendesk-integrated ticketing and license/billing management for the CSM team.
- •Developed and integrated a custom internal database query tool, based on a customized fork of the open-source Redash project, directly into the ops portal so support staff could self-serve data lookups without direct database access.
- •Prototyped an EHR-integration client and Chrome extension, in partnership with an external data partner, to pull patient data via API from systems like Athenahealth, laying groundwork for a new product line; maintained an AWS S3-backed file management system for the legacy AngularJS application.
- •Created a React-based installation and scheduling portal handling appointment scheduling, rescheduling, and license/secret-key management for new practice onboarding, plus partner-specific scheduling integrations.
- •Maintained the public agent and license download site and began a second-generation Redux Toolkit rebuild of the ops portal before transitioning off the account.
